Owen Family Name Book

Owen Family Name Book

A name that stretches back to the original Celtic culture of Wales, ‘Owen’ is redolent of high romance and drama.
Many of the name have gained high honours and distinction through a range of endeavours from exploration to the arts, while others have stamped their mark on the historical record as pioneering social reformers.
On the high seas Vice Admiral William Owen, born in Manchester in 1174, was the Royal Navy officer who made a number of intrepid and important voyages of discovery that include mapping the entire coast of East Africa from the Cape to the Horn of Africa.
From exploration to social reform, David Owen was the Welsh-born mill proprietor who, along with fellow reformer David Dale, established the ‘model’ mill village of New Lanark, in Lanarkshire, in the early decades of the nineteenth century.
Chronicled here are the colourful and inspiring lives and times of the Owens of both yesteryear and today.
